Correspondence B/W David Foster Wallace & Don Delillo at Austin's Harry Ransom Center

This weekend Adam and I were in Austin, Texas visiting family. While we were there, we stopped in for a visit at the Harry Ransom Center. The Ransom Center features a near-incredible collection of the  letters and works of some of America's brightest contemporary fiction writers. I can't wait to give you guys a full recap of all the amazing correspondences we were able to check out. Saying I took LOTS of photos is definitely an understatement. Here's a little teaser to whet your appetite! What was that you said Don Delillo? xxE

  1. Dellilo is wonderful. I look over at my bookshelf and see White Noise sandwiched between Jerzy Konsinki's Pinball and Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead. I leaf through Pinball for fun and find as a bookmark a business card from about 20 years ago of my first job out of college. You can't do that with an ebook.

  2. Welcome to Livre Life. Thanks for reading!

Actually, it's funny you should mention ebooks. One of the coolest things about the Ransom Center is that they've not only amassed the letters of contemporary authors, but their libraries as well.

Looking at DFW's annotated copies of Borges and McCarthy and (of course) DeLillo, you really get a sense of how much he valued the act of note taking and underlining; it was part of his craft. And a process that will be hard to replicate in e-reader format, for sure.

  3. Oh, my. I just found out about this correspondence and am so eager to take a look at it. Since I'm located in Germany I won't (ever) be able to visit the Ransom Center myself. Would it be possible for you to make your photos available somehow?
Since I don't want to type in my eMail-address here, could you answer on the given website (as a comment or the "Muss es sein?" link?
    That would be perfect.

  4. Hi Thorsten,

Thanks for writing in! I'd be happy to make the rest of the pictures available. We'll try and get them up this weekend. In the meantime, I know that the Ransom Center does have a fair amount of their material online as well. It's definitely worth checking out the site! Nice to meet a fellow fan.

    xxE
